We write to offer some thoughts on strategy to advance Green positions in next week's Presidential Preference Primary (PPP). While the Georgia Green Party takes no position in partisan elections where no Green candidate is running, we strongly encourage Greens to exercise their voting rights in support of Green stances on current issues, particularly our opposition to the US policy lending material support to Israel's colonialist war on Palestinians.
Activists i
nspired by Michigan's "Uncommitted" campaign are organizing a Leave It Blank campaign here in Georgia. The objective is to use the upcoming Democratic Party Presidential Preference Primary in Georgia to demonstrate opposition to President Joe Biden's support of Israel's war on Palestinians. They are calling on people to vote in the Democratic Party primary and undervote their ballot, selecting no candidate for President. Similarly, some have discussed pulling a Republican ballot in opposition to that party's front runner.
Georgia has open primaries, allowing individuals to register without declaring a political affiliation. In open primaries, you can participate in any party's primary without affecting your membership in your own party, except for eligibility to vote in a party's primary runoff, which requires prior participation in that party's primary in the current election cycle or a refusal to partake in any other party's primary. This exception does not impact the Presidential Primary, but it might limit participation in downslate races associated with the Presidential Primary while still allowing you to choose another party in the General Primary.
In addition, only registered voters can sign their names to ballot access nominating petitions. This is a good time to make sure you are registered to vote so that you can support our efforts in the next few months to get Greens on the ballot in November 2024. If your registration is not currently valid, or you need to register in your county at your current residential address, you may do so here.
